About The Salvation Army

Transforming lives through compassion and faith for over 140 years

For more than 140 years, The Salvation Army has been guided by our mission to care for those in need, inspired by the love of Jesus. Our work is driven by faith and a deep commitment to serving humanity, breaking cycles of disadvantage, and restoring dignity to those who are most vulnerable.

Together with our philanthropic partners, we can work to break the cycle of poverty and disadvantage, helping to uplift individuals, families, and entire communities.

The need: a call to serve

Australia is facing a growing crisis. Each night, more than 122,000 people experience homelessness, while countless others suffer from poverty, addiction, domestic violence, and crises like bushfires or floods. These challenges demand not just immediate action, but a deep and sustained commitment.

Your investment allows us to meet urgent needs while building pathways to recovery and hope, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Our service pillars: compassionate, holistic support

At The Salvation Army, our mission is to live, love, and fight for justice alongside those
who are suffering, offering practical solutions rooted in compassion and faith.

Homelessness services

Homelessness services

As one of the largest non-government providers of homelessness services, we respond to urgent needs with a wide network of support. From temporary accommodation and case management to financial aid and access to essential services, we aim to not only provide shelter but foster pathways to stability and independence. Last year alone, our homelessness services assisted more than 38,000 people and provided nearly 1.63 million meals.

Family & domestic violence services

Family and domestic violence services

The Salvation Army offers a lifeline to individuals and families facing domestic violence, providing a safe refuge and specialised support services across Australia. We focus on prevention, restoration and healing to provide specialised family violence support to those experiencing and recovering from violence, modern slavery and forced marriage. Last year, we assisted over 11,000 women and children escaping violence, ensuring their journey to safety and empowerment is met with compassionate, professional care.

Addiction recovery programs

Addiction recovery programs

For those struggling with addiction, we offer evidenced, best practice support to those seeking our assistance, and always respect their autonomy and dignity. Our comprehensive services include residential rehabilitation, community programs, and harm reduction initiatives. Last year, we provided more than 229,000 support sessions, meeting individuals where they are on their recovery journey and helping them find lasting freedom from addiction.

Youth services

Youth services

The Salvation Army creates avenues for young people to explore opportunities, build support networks, and access, participate and contribute to their communities. Our youth services include housing and homelessness, driver training, education, employment and training, social and community activities, specialist therapeutic responses and youth justice programs. In 2023, our youth programs provided over 74,000 support sessions of care for young people in need.

Emergency relief

Emergency relief

For Australians facing financial crisis, our emergency relief program (known as Doorways) offers immediate assistance with essentials like food, housing, and bill support. Working hand-in-hand with financial counselling, Doorways provides holistic, practical support to help individuals and families regain stability. In 2023, Doorways supported over 135,000 people, ensuring no one has to struggle alone during tough times.
